Manuka Honey

What is Manuka Honey?

Manuka honey is produced by bees which gather nectar from the Manuka bush (Leptospermum scoparium), an indigenous New Zealand shrub species. Manuka Honey is world renowned for its unique characteristics. Scientific research has discovered that naturally occurring methylglyoxal is key compound in Manuka Honey. Not all Manuka Honey is equal - It is important to know that the level of methylglyoxal can vary greatly in Manuka Honey, so you want to be sure you know what you are getting. That is why Manuka Health test and certify every batch of MGO™ Manuka Honey to guarantee the level of methylglyoxal present, as indicated by the MGO™ certification rating on the label.

What are the advantages of MGO™ Manuka Honey certification?

MGO™ Manuka Honey is certified to contain guaranteed levels of the naturally occurring compound methylglyoxal, and undergoes stringent quality testing to ensure premium quality. Each batch is fully traceable right back to the  beekeeper it came from. Manuka Health Manuka honey products use the methylglyoxal rating system based on the scientific evidence revealed in 2008 by Professor Thomas Henle and his research group (Technical University of Dresden, Germany) which identified methylglyoxal as one of the key compounds found in New Zealand Manuka honey. The MGO™ Manuka Honey rating and quality system means our customers can easily make an informed choice when looking for certified Manuka Honey.

Propolis & Royal Jelly

What is Propolis and what is it used for?

Propolis is a resinous compound that honeybees make from resin gathered from tree buds and bark. The bees gather the resin and mix it with wax and enzymes to produce propolis. Propolis is then used to seal the hive and protect it from infection. New Zealand Propolis is rich in flavonoids and caffeates including caffeic acid phenethyl ester or CAPE. These bioactives are responsible for the beneficial health-giving properties of propolis.

For more information on Propolis visit the Propolis section.

What is Royal Jelly and what is it used for?

Royal Jelly is an extremely nutritious, creamy food substance produced by nursing bees to feed young, growing bees and the hive's Queen Bee. It is the exclusive food of the Queen Bee that lives approximately 6 years, while worker bees live approximately 6 weeks eating honey and pollen. The only difference between the Queen and the workers is their diet. Royal jelly is used as a nutritious supplement for skin health, as a general health tonic, for fighting the effects of aging, and for supporting the immune system.  See our range of Royal Jelly products
