Hydrating Hair Mask with CoconutFriday, September 15, 2017 | Fiona
Coconut oil is known for its hydrating properties, unlike other oils that simply coat your hair, coconut oil really seems to penetrate deep into the follicle. Combine it with honey and you get a great hydrating hair and scalp treatment that will help fight against flyaways, split ends and an irritated scalp or dandruff.
For medium length hair you'll need:
- 3Tbs of coconut oil
- 1 egg yolk
- 1/2 avocado
- 1tsp of manuka honey
Mix the ingredients in a bowl with a fork or whisk. You may like to slightly warm the oil first so the honey dissolves more easily, but not too much or you'll cook your egg.
Apply to your hair and scalp and allow it to sit for at least 15 minutes. You can wrap your head with clingfilm to speed up the process as the heat from your scalp will make the ingredients infuse into your hair.
To get it out you might need to shampoo a couple of times, or if you don't use shampoo you can try mixing one egg with a small amount of water and leaving it on for about 10 mins. Rinse with cool water (so you don't cook the egg and denature the proteins), then follow with a teaspoon of castile soap. Castile soap is a natural vegan soap that's relatively cheap at about $10 for 500ml.
